Overview

In order to accomplish the OTA sync, you will need to have the following:

• A Treo 650 or 700P with a Data Access plan (preferably unlimited)
• A VPN (Virtual Private Network) Gateway
• A Palm VPN client

The process can be summarized as follows: The VPN client software will establish a connection to your VPN Gateway in your office. Once this secure connection is established, the Treo will have an IP address, and as such be part of your local network. You will then use the HotSync application on your Treo to perform a network HotSync. The Treo will connect to your desktop computer (where you normally perform your sync) and perform a HotSync using whatever conduits you specify. Once you have followed the steps in this guide, the entire process will run in a single step simply by tapping the HotSync icon on your Treo HotSync application.  Because your Treo will be connecting directly to your desktop, it is important that your desktop computer remains on while you are away, otherwise you will not be able to connect to it.  It may also be necessary to disable hibernation or other sleep features which could power down the computer or other critical components such as the network card.

If you have the appropriate network infrastructure in place, this guide will not be difficult to follow. It does, however, require some basic networking knowledge, and may require the services of an IT professional in order to configure some aspects described herein. This is not meant to be a step-by-step guide, as you can achieve the same end result using a variety of network configurations, hardware, and software, and it is impossible to cover them all here.
